Religious Ragings: The Clergy Project: Is Atheism is the new Gay?

The Clergy Project: Is Atheism is the new Gay?

The Clergy Project assists atheist preachers leaving the religion closet/confessional by using lgbt “coming out” metaphors.

As an atheist, LGBT, or Atheist LGBT, does the Clergy Project’s ‘coming out’ metaphor for atheist clergy offend you?

I really don’t think that atheism is the new “gay” nor do i think discrimination of it will take the heat off the lgbt movement.  I do actually like the terminology “coming out” and i don’t think the lgbt community owns the phrase.  The term accurately describes what some people are going through. The term “closeted” Implies something that is stored away or hidden.  Someone can be a closeted homosexual or a closeted atheist.  The term is equally valid.

I don’t think that being or becoming an atheist is a choice per say… just like i don’t think that being religious is a choice but hate and bigotry are.  I know some atheists that will tell you that they would prefer to have some sense of spirituality or would like to believe in something but provided there is no evidence they are inclined not to.

Being an atheist is in no way similar to being gay as it relates to free will…

I think it is time for atheism in america to rise up.  I think we are ready for this and the constitution supports us… i think the more publicity we have the more people will put aside their beliefs and join us.  Sure, there will be those who hate it and that’s okay.  I just want america to know that we are here, we are proud, and we are a generally decent group of human beings.  it’s time for this.

About

I want this blog to be about social issues concerning religion, race, gender, and sexuality. They are a HUGE interest of mine.

I have to say that occasionally I will be wrong and I'm sorry when I am, after all I am only human. ;) However I will do my best to say only what is right and true about these issues.

Thank you for looking!
